Join professional wildlife photographer and Master Naturalist, Dawn Wilson, in scenic Haines, Alaska to photograph bald eagles as they gather for one last run of salmon before the winter sets in along the coast of southeast Alaska.

We will meet in Juneau, Alaska on the evening of November 15 for a meet and greet.

On the morning of November 16, we will arrive in Haines, Alaska to check into the hotel for our four-night stay and then head out for the afternoon to find eagles congregating along the Chilkat River where a late salmon run brings 100-300 eagles to the area. We will cover natural history of the area, why the eagles gather in such large numbers, and why this unusual salmon run occurs along the Chilkat River.

For the next three full days we will spend our time photographing the eagles along the Chilkat River. We will also head out to a couple of Bald_Eagle_Haines_12Bald_Eagle_Haines_12A bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) flies directly towards the camera at the Chilkat River Bald Eagle Preserve near Haines, Alaska other areas to look for eagles in different settings and other wildlife, including mountain goats, Dall sheep, late season brown bears, American dippers and gulls in the nearby rivers, lakes and mountains. Opportunities exist to photograph landscapes with the high peaks of the surrounding snow-covered mountains and possibly photograph the Northern Lights if conditions are right.

We will head out one last time on the fifth morning to photograph eagles before heading back to Juneau in the afternoon of November 20.

This is an intimate group of no more than six participants, allowing individual attention for questions, instruction and image reviews. Each evening we will take a look at photographs from the day's shoot, review tips and tricks for post-processing, and get to know members of the group. Presentations will also be given covering bird photography and natural history of the area.
