Amazon Book Sale!Today is the last day to take advantage of discounted prices on books on Amazon. Here is a list of several on my book wish list that I will be picking up and a few that I have read or reference and highly recommend. Enjoy the shopping and the reading!
This title has been on my wish list ever since finishing the author's previous book Braiding Sweetgrass. An Indigenous researcher, Kimmerer looks at the idea of reciprocity – both in the gift world and the natural world.
Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants
Have you ever thought about the life lessons plants can teach us? Have you ever considered how Indigenous people, women in particular, have a connection with the natural world that helps to guide their philosophies? You will after reading this powerful book from botanist and member of a Native American tribe Robin Wall Kimmerer.
Guy Tal has written numerous books about photography – not from the perspective of how to set up your camera or how to compose a scene, but from the philosophical viewpoint of an artist. He gets you thinking about why and how you photograph what you do. This title continues down that same path, considering all of the things that you as a photographer bring to the images you are creating. Filled with some of Tal's calming and intricate landscape images of more details than grand scenes, this title covers topics like expression as an introvert, transcending seeing, mindfulness, creative blocks and more. 1984 Were you required to read this book in high school? Did you pick it up in 1984 just because it was 1984 and you wanted to see how it compared to current society? It is time to read this chilling novel again. Orwell brings a prophecy about a dystopian society to pages that seem all to eerily timely to today's societies. Reading it again felt so much more eye-opening than when I read it 40 years ago.
I have recommended this book before but it is still one that I regularly bring up to people looking for a great read. The story brings together a connection about a boy growing up into a man on the vast expanse of the Alaskan bush in an area that is now Kobuk National Park. His family lives off the land, living a symbiotic existence with the local caribou herds. Then Alaska becomes a state, the government starts to bring in new rules and the locals – who have lived off this land for generations – watch as their world changes before their eyes.
Whether you are Republican or Democrat, this title, written by former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama, shows a different side of life in the White House. What is the experience like to grow up in Southside Chicago, meet a man at a law firm and then reside in the most famous address in the United States for eight years? Obama brings a sense of reflection and honesty about not only her time as one of the most powerful women in the U.S. but how she her husband raised daughters in that environment, how she kept a focus on her own initiatives and where it all started in Chicago.
